Journal 12 Another use for で

We can already use に To indicate that something exists Somwhere, for example

いぬが あそこに います。 There is a dog over there.

But に Can only be used this way with imasu and arimasu. For more active verbs, use で Where に Would Normally be

フランクくんは 日本で べんきょう して います。 Frank is studying in Japan.

いぬは あそこで たべて います。 The dog is eating over there.

It’s common to hear で & は Being used together.

日本では なつは あつい です。 In Japan, it is hot in the summer.

Often Japanese people will use では When the verb is います Or あります Even though it gramatically should be には。

日本では いぬが いますか。 Are there dog’s in japan?

It would be proper to say 日本には いぬが いますか。 But Japanese will often use the first one.

  1. Your entry looks okay, but let me ask one question. How different are these sentences? Do they have same meanings?

    フランクくんは 日本で べんきょう して います。
    フランクくんは 日本で べんきょう します。
